What is Complex Care?

Complex Care is specialized medical support for children with serious or long-term health conditions that affect multiple body systems or require coordination among several healthcare providers and services. Children with medical complexity may need frequent hospitalizations, use specialized equipment, and receive multiple medications and therapies.

The goal of Complex Care is to provide a holistic, coordinated approach that addresses all aspects of your child’s health needs—ensuring that care is comprehensive, well-organized, and centered around your child and family.

Why did my orthopedic surgeon refer my child to orthopedic complex care?

Health Optimization

Will carefully review all aspects of your child’s health to make sure they are in the best possible condition before surgery. This thorough check helps minimize risks and support a smooth recovery after the procedure.

Continuity of Care

Will serve as a central point of communication between all of your child’s specialists and ensure that the inpatient care team has the most accurate and complete information about your child’s health if hospitalization is needed.

Coordination of Care

Will coordinate and organize all of your child’s healthcare needs within the health system to ensure everything is streamlined and ready for their surgery.

What should I expect at my telehealth appointment?

After your child’s surgeon consults the Orthopedic Complex Care Program, Jocelyn will review your child’s medical history and begin preparing a comprehensive report. A nurse from her team will then contact you to schedule a one-hour telehealth appointment.

During this virtual visit, Jocelyn will work with you to develop an individualized medical plan for your child. This plan will address preoperative, intraoperative (in the operating room), and postoperative needs. It may include recommendations such as adjustments to feeding regimens, ordering labs, imaging, or tests, and referrals to additional specialists as needed.

Once finalized, the plan will be shared with your child’s primary surgeon and team. Jocelyn will also present the plan at a monthly multidisciplinary conference that includes specialists from orthopedics, pediatrics, anesthesia, and nursing. This collaborative approach ensures that multiple perspectives are considered to provide the best possible care for your child.

If your child is admitted to the hospital, Jocelyn will support the inpatient teams—including PICU, Orthopedics, and General Pediatrics—to ensure continuity of care. After discharge, she will follow up with you by phone within 1–2 weeks to confirm your child’s recovery and address any concerns.
